On Saturday Morning at about 1:30 am, the Cutchogue Fire Department was called to assist the Mattituck Fire Department with an ambulance at the scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident on County Route 48, near the Mattituck / Cutchogue Fire District border.

Mattituck Firefighters were on the scene of an accident involving a box truck that had ran off the roadway. But the circumstances surrounding the accident is what made this crash unusual.

The truck that had been traveling westbound on County Route 48, a four-lane highway, and crossed the center median/ culvert and came across the eastbound lanes into a homes yard. The truck drove over several trees in the yard, missing the home and collided with a parked pick-up in the driveway. The truck then continued on, striking a large tree before coming to rest in an adjacent yard. The force of the impact, demolished the pick-up truck, separating it into three different pieces spreading car parts and debris across the yard.

Miraculously, despite damages to the truck, the two occupants of the box truck sustained only minor injuries as a result of the crash and were transported to local hospitals by Mattituck and Cutchogue F.D. Ambulances.

Both Mattituck and Cutchogue firefighters stood by at the scene providing lighting and support as the vehicles were safely removed by a heavy duty towing company.

In addition to the ambulance, CFD also responded with an engine and heavy rescue/floodlight truck.

Volunteers were on scene for approximately 3 hours before clearing the scene.

The Southold Town Police also responded to investigate the cause of the crash.

Units: Chiefs 8-5-30, 8-5-31, 8-5-32, Ambulance 8-5-17, Engine 8-5-4, Heavy Rescue 8-5-5
