October 4, 2012

On Tuesday September 18th the Cutchogue Fire Department was honored by Suffolk County EMS and REMSCO (Regional Emergency Medical Services Council) for actions that took place during a recent call that resulted in a pre-hospital save.

The incident took place on July 31st , 2012.

On this day, at 8:06 p.m. the Cutchogue Fire Department was activated for a Signal 16 (EMS Alarm) for an adult male unresponsive at a local residence..

With several EMT's at the firehouse at the time of the call, the ambulance responded almost immediatley.

First to arrive on scene was a unit from Southold Town Police, who found an 86 year male on the floor in cardiac arrest, and began rescucitaion efforts.

Moments later, the CFD Chiefs and Ambulance also arrived on scene. The Ambulance crew continued the resucitation efforts, adminstering CPR (Cardio Pulminary Rescucitaion) and utilized Advanced Life Support techniques.

The patient was packaged and transported to Eastern Long Island Hopsital and during transport the Lucas II CPR machine was used.

Through the efforts of the crew, a pulse was restored to the patient prior to arriving at the hospital.

Since that time the patient has been treated and was recently reported to have released to an alternitive health care facility for rehabilitation.

At REMSCO's regular monthly meeting in Happaugue, Rescue Squad Officers, Capt. Rich Hartmann, and Lt. Oreanna Kaelin recieved citations form REMSCO Chairman Jay Gardiner on behalf of the ambulance crew from that day.

REMSCO is the local agency that oversees all EMS agencies in Suffolk County routinely evalutates incidents througout the county in an effort to improve the standard of care.

REMSCO finds it important to present these awards because they stress the importance of CPR, and proves that CPR can truly save a life.

The Commissioners along with Chiefs, Officers, and Members of the Cutchogue Fire Department would like to congratulate the following members who were part of the Ambulance crew that day.

Thank you for your effort and dedication.

Ambulance Crew:
Paramedic / Rescue Squad Captain Richard Hartmann
Paramedic Kathy Hartmann
