Passing of a Brother: Firefighter Michael S. "Smoke" Boken Answers his last Alarm

It is with deep regret that the Chiefs announce the passing of Michael S. "Smokin" Boken, the Father of Ex Chief Michael C. Boken.

"Smoke" as he was known to many passed away on Tuesday morning at Stony Brook University Hospital at the age of 66..

He was laid to rest in Friday Morning at St. Agnes cemetery in Greenport.

He Joined the department in 1975 and was an active members for over 30 years before becoming an honorary member in 2005.

During his time with us, he held several officer positions within the department including Chief Driver, Lieutenant and was a Co-Captain of the Panthers drill team in the 80's, also was chairman of the Chicken Barbecue for 3 consecutive years.

He was honored as Co-Firefighter of the year in 1994, an honor he shared with his son Michael as co-recipients.

The Chiefs officers and members of the Cutchogue Fire Department wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Maryann, Mike & Tara, his daughter Trish and the entire Boken family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.


His resume that was read by Chief Brewer at his memorial service is below:

Michael Boken joined the United Fire Co. No. 1 of the Cutchogue Fire Department on, March 6, 1975 and is listed on the Company Rolls as our 332nd member.

Michael “Smokin” Boken or just “Smoke” as we all knew him by was assigned to the Assistant Driver List in 1978. Followed by his election as Chief Driver of Pump 4 in 1979.

He served on the Fire Police Squad for many years beginning in 1980.

He was elected as Chief Driver of 8-5-2 in May of 1981and re–elected to this position
for the next 4 years.

Michael was on the House Committee in 1984 through 2001 and on the Kitchen and Truck Committees in 1986. Also in that year he was Co–Captain of the Racing Team.

Smoke took care of the Family Picnic in 1985 and 1986 and he chaired our annual Chicken BBQ in 1994, 1995 and 1996.
Mike was elected as Lieutenant of 8-5-6 from 1987 to 1989 and again in 1995 and 1996. He was elected as Chief Driver of this vehicle in 1994.

In 2001 he was elected as Chief Driver of 8-5-1.

Michael’s training accomplishments included:
1st Responder Certificate in June of 1993
Water Qualification and Swimming Certificate in 1996
Motor Pump Operator in 1998
TIPS Certification in 1997

He was honored as Co-Firefighter of the year in 1994.

He was a North Fork Volunteer Fireman's Association (NFVFA) Delegate from 1999 through 2001 and a North Fork Judge from 1996 through 2001.
In 2005, after more than 30 yeas of active service, Mike requested to go on the Honorary List.

Michael Boken was a dedicated member of the United Fire Company #1 offering his time and talents to the protection of life and the preservation of property of the residents in Cutchogue and he exhibited the true spirit of a Volunteer Fireman in the performance of his duties and the tasks assigned to him.

We gather here tonight to honor the memory of our departed Brother Fireman, Michael S. Boken, and to pay tribute to his many years of faithful service in the Cutchogue Fire Department, and to the community.
