On Sunday Morning, members of the Cutchogue Fire Department along with the other 8th division Fire Departments joined their fellow residents of Southold Town in remembering those who lost their lives on September 11th 2001.

The ceremony took place at Jean Cochran Park in Peconic, the site of the Town Fallen Firefighters & September 11th memorial.

The The Firefighters memorial circles around a 35 foot Roberto Julio Bessin sculpture that sits atop a pedestal created from I-beams from the 33rd floor World Trade Center's North Tower, and is reminiscent of a phoenix rising from the ashes.

On the Fifteenth anniversary of that day, the ceremony served as a time of reflection, looking back to the tragic events that took place on that morning, a day that has forever changed our nation and us in some way.

Firefighters stood at attention as the silence of the ceremony was broken when a bell tolled 15 times at both 9:59 and 10:28 am, the time of the collapses of the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center.

In all, 2,974 Americans lost their lives in the terror attacks on the tragic day.

A total of 411 emergency workers who responded to the scene died as they attempted rescue and fire suppression efforts. The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) lost 343 Firefighters. The New York City Police Department lost 23 officers and the Port Authority Police Department lost 37 officers. Private EMS units lost 8 additional EMTs and Paramedics.

At the conclusion of the ceremony the community came together as they placed nearly three thousand American flags around the sculpture and 1/2 mile track of Cochran Park in recognition of the 2,974 lives that were lost that day. Many of those who attended were seen touching the steel that once was part of those symbolic buildings and personally reflecting on their own thoughts.

As we move past the Fifteenth Anniversary of this tragic day, we ask to Never Forget and offer a moment of silence and prayer to the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice on this tragic day. Pray for all the families who lost their loved ones in the attacks on 9/11.
