April 19, 2017

On January 7, 2017 Ambulance 8-5-17 was involved in a motor vehicle accident that heavily damaged the vehicle and placed it out of service. http://www.cutchoguefiredept.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=777

In the weeks following, working with insurance companies, the Commissioners of the Cutchogue Fire District looked at several replacement options that would best serve the needs of the District.

In the end, the Decision was made to re-utilize the existing modular box from the damaged ambulance and remount it on a new chassis.

Because the excellent condition of box the fact that it was undamaged in the accident, it was determined that it could be upgraded and re-used, resulting in a significant cost savings to the District, when compared to the purchase of an entirely new ambulance.

Since that time the ambulance was sent to VCI ambulances specialties in New Jersey where the project is being completed.

The modular box originally built by Horton, has been removed from the damaged 2005 Ford Chassis, and has been remounted onto a brand new 2017 Chevrolet chassis with a Duramax diesel.

Several upgrades and enhancements will be done to the box during the process.

When the ambulance returns, CFD will be receiving a virtually new Ambulance that will closely match the existing CFD Ambulance 8-5-16, in both layout and chassis.

The project is expected to be completed in the next couple of weeks, and we look forward to its return to Cutchogue.

Since the accident, CFD has placed into service a temporary loaner ambulance, as a secondary rig, to help ensure that CFD is ready to respond to any emergency that may occur.

Check Back for More Updates.
