Firetruck Friday: New 8-5-3 Progress Photos

May 26, 2017

For the past two years, members of the Cutchogue Fire Department have spent countless hours researching and designing a new truck to replace our aging 8-5-3.

In January 2017 Construction began on the new truck and continues to make progress as we anticipate delivery late summer.

Placed into service in 1987, the current E-one / Ford pumper has served as first due engine since its purchase, and since 2001 has filled the duties second & third due engine. Over the years it has responded to countless emergencies in and around the Cutchogue Fire District

Although still fully operational, at over 30 years old, 8-5-3 has begun to show its age and currently lacks newer safety features and technologies offered on newer apparatus, most notable is a fully enclosed cab that allows firefighters to be fully protected and belted in the seated positions when responding to alarms.

In December 2016, voters overwhelmingly approved the proposal put forth by the Commissioners of the Cutchogue Fire District to purchase a 75' Aerial / Quint apparatus as a replacement vehicle.

The Cutchogue Fire District is proud to announce that the new vehicle will be a 2017 Spartan ERV 75' aerial / quint purchased though Hendrickson Fire Equipment of Islandia.

The Committee found a vehicle available on Spartan's stock unit / demo program that best fit the needs of the community, thus resulting in a considerable savings when compared to a totally custom designed vehicle.

The new vehicle will have the capabilities as functioning as both a first-due engine, and a ladder truck when needed. It will also have the distinction to serve as the Department's first-ever ladder truck.

Some of the features include:

Spartan ERV / Metro-star chassis
Cummins 450 hp engine
Hale 1500 gpm Qmax pump
500 gallon water tank
75' aerial ladder
1000' 5 inch hose
Seating for 8 firefighters.

The chassis has been completed and the ladder is currently being mounted the chassis. This will be followed by the body construction in the final phase.

Pictures of the trucks progress are posted. Check back as more pictures will be posted as they become available.

We look forward to its arrival in Cutchogue in the coming months!

Thank you to the Community, Commissioners, Truck Committee members and the membership for the support of this project.
