Over the course of the day on Friday January 22nd, CFD Volunteers answered 4 calls for service.
The first call came at 10:00 am for an Automatic Fire Alarm at the Peconic Retreat Adult Home located on New Suffolk Rd. Firefighters arrived to find an accidental activation and quickly cleared the scene.
Just after Noon, CFD was activated for (2) simultaneous alarms.
The first of the two was an investigation for a report of an audible alarm coming from a residence in Nassau Point with the caller reporting water flowing from the front door.
Crews Engine 8-5-4 and Heavy Rescue 8-5-5 arrived, and found a broken water pipe that had caused a leak and damage to the home and activated the fire alarm. Firefighters turned off both the water and the utilities to prevent any further damages.
The second of the simultaneous calls was an EMS response for a victim of a fall which was handled by a full staffed ambulance crew on 8-5-17.
The fourth and final call for the day was received at about 10:00 p.m. when CFD was alerted to respond for a reported Chimney fire on Oak Drive in Broadwaters Cove.
Firefighters arrived and found that there was a small fire in the chimney that started shortly after the homeowner had lit a fire in the fireplace.
Firefighters laddered the home to inspect the chimney from the roof. A visual inspection found that there was a small fire on the walls of the chimney and was quickly extinguished. Other crews checked the home's attic and interior walls surrounding the chimney for any fire extension utilizing a thermal imaging camera.
Firefighters remained on scene for 45 minutes.
Chimney fires are often caused by the build-up of debris and unburnt fuels that accumulate on the walls of a chimney. In order to prevent chimney fires homeowners are reminded to periodically check their chimneys for any blockages and accumulations and have them cleaned if needed.
