On Saturday morning at 9:17 a.m. the Cutchogue Fire Department was activated for an automatic fire alarm at the North Fork Self Storage Center on Commerce Drive.
The first arriving Chief found a smoke condition in the hallway of the main building. This building is part of a four building complex that contains hundreds of individual storage compartments.
First- due engine 8-5-4, arrived and laid a supply line from the street and sent its crew to the interior to find the source of the smoke.
Because of buildings size, overall layout, multiple search teams from were deployed to check multiple areas and crawl spaces within the building as the smoke began to dissipate.
After an extensive search using thermal imaging cameras, the firefighters were able to trace the smoke to the HVAC system. A fan motor that is located in the ceiling space had an apparent electrical problem causing smoke to be spread throughout the building.
Crews were on scene for over an hour.
The Cutchogue FD would like to thank the staff of North Fork Self Storage for assisting firefighters in gaining access to the many areas of the building.
