On Sunday Morning March 7th, at 12:30 a.m. Cutchogue's Bravest were dispatched to respond to a Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) in the area of Cox Lane and Oregon Rd.
The accident was the result of a police chase in which the driver had attempted to evade being stopped by a Southold Town Police Officer.
The vehicle travelled eastbound on Oregon Rd. and lost control striking a steep dirt embankment that caused the vehicle to become airborne and land in a field. The vehicle rolled over several times before coming to rest in the field over 200 feet from the roadway.
Police and first arriving CFD units found the lone occupant lying outside beside his vehicle and quickly began treatment. Because of the damage to the vehicle and suspected injuries, a Suffolk County Police Medi-Vac Helicopter was requested to respond.
The patient was packaged and transported to a nearby landing zone that was secured by Engine 8-5-3, where he was then flown to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment.
Crews from Heavy Rescue 8-5-5 and Fire Police Units remained on scene to assist the Police with lighting while they conducted their investigation. As a result of the investigation the driver was charged by Police with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI).
Crews cleared the scene around 2:00 a.m.
This would be the first of 4 calls CFD Volunteers would respond to over the course of the day.
