Animal Rescue - CFD Rescues Trapped Deer

On Tuesday afternoon the Cutchogue Fire Department at approximately 1700 hrs. responded to a unique and unusual call.

CFD was special requested to assist the Southold Town Police Department at the scene of an animal incident on Church Lane in Cutchogue.

A young deer became trapped inside lawn furniture in the back yard of a residence.

The deer had been trapped for over an hour in a precarious position and was unable to get free despite efforts from the homeowner and police.

At the request of STPD, Chief Tom Shalvey responded to scene to see what assistance CFD could provide to help free the animal.

In turn, the Department's Heavy Rescue Truck 8-5-5 was requested to respond to scene with tools.

Once on scene the the crew from 8-5-5, protected the animal and utilized the battery operated hyrdraulic cutters to cut apart the metal lawn chair to free the deer.

Once free, the frightened deer almost immediately ran off and appeared to be unharmed.

Crews were on scene for 30 minutes.
