By The CFD Chiefs
September 26, 2020

On Saturday afternoon at approximately 4:54 pm Cutchogue's Bravest were dispatched to respond to the area of Commerce Drive and Depot Lane for a reported brush / mulch fire.

Police and Fire Department units discovered a mulch fire at the Cutchogue Materials & Recycling Center in Cutchogue.

Arriving firefighters discovered small portion of a large compost pile burning and being fueled by winds.

Once a water supply was established by laying supply hose to a hydrant in the complex, Firefighters utilized the deck gun from 8-5-4 and handlines to attack and contain the fire.

Once the fire was knocked down a pay loader was used to spread apart to pile so that all of the remaining hot spots could be extinguished.

Several hand lines were used to douse hot spots as the material was spread out.

The Mattituck FD assisted at the scene with an additional engine while the Southold FD stood by at the Cutchogue Firehouse in the event of any other alarms.

Firefighters were on scene for over 2 ½ hours

Units: Chiefs 8-5-30 & 32, Engines 8-5-1 & 8-5-4, Brush Truck 8-5-12, Heavy Rescue 8-5-5

Mutual Aid: Mattituck FD Engine 8-6-3, Southold FD, Stony Brook First Responder
