On Saturday morning April 10h, CFD Firefighters began the testing of the nearly 60 fire wells throughout the Cutchogue Fire District.

Twice a year, each fire well is tested by our Volunteers to ensure that each well is capable of providing a water supply to protect the homes in the community in the event of a fire.

These wells are spaced throughout the Fire District to provide a water supply to those areas that are not protected by fire hyrdrants or public water supply. Unlike hydrants that provide a positve water supply, fire wells require a truck to pump or "draft" from the ground to the surface.

Currently, only parts of the Fire District is protected by a public water supply, making the maintenance and upkeep of these wells in un-hydranted areas important.

Additionally this exercise provides Volunteers with valuable training time, allowing them to learn and refamiliarize themselves with the Department apparatus.

Thank you to the many firefighters who dedicated this morning and several nights over the past week to make this possible
