Mutual Aid - Barn Fire in Mattituck

Early Sunday Morning the Cutchogue Fire Department was called to assist the Mattituck Fire Department at the scene of a working Barn Fire.

At 00:57 hrs 911callers reported a barn on fire at 6900 Wickham Avenue in Mattituck. STPD communications dispatched the Mattituck FD to the scene.

The first Police and Fire Department units arrived and confimed the working fire, finding a garage type structure fully involved with fire that was beginning to extend to a second adjacent barn.

The Cutchogue Fire Department was called to respond and assist at the scene with a Rapid Intervention Team.

The fire's location was located in an area with limited water supply and the nearest hydrant was located a long distance away. Water that was used to fight the fire was intiallly supplied by MFD's tanker while a long hose lay was established to the closet hydrant.

Cutchogue FD's water supply engine 8-5-1 was additionally called to the scene to assist with completing the hose lay to supply water to the fire.

8-5--1 layed out approx 1600+ feet of LDH to the scene to complete the over 2500' stretch that was started by Mattitucks Engine 8-6-1.

Once the fire was knocked down CFD firefighters would assist the Mattituck Fire Firefighters with the extensive overhaul and checking the other nearby buildings for any extension.

Quick actions by MFD firefighters prevented the fire from extending to the larger barns.

Crews were on scene for approximatley 3 hours.

1 friefighter was treated and transported to a local hospital for minor injuries.

As is routine the cause of the fire is under is under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad.

Later in the incident a CFD ambulance was requested to stand by at the scene during clean up and overhaul.

The incident was unde the command of Mattituck FD chief Ed Rittberg 8-6-30
