On Sunday evening at 9:00 p.m. the Cutchogue Fire Department was dispatched to a reported Motor Vehicle accident on County Route 48 East of Bridge Lane.

Southold Town Police Communications began receiving numerous 911 calls reporting a multi-vehicle accident involving a rollover.

Shortly after dispatch, Stony Brook First Responder Medic 2 while en-route to another call, arrived to discover that one of the involved vehicles was on fire.

First arriving Police and Fire Department units were confronted with an accident scene that included the following: A Vehicle that was overturned and on fire, a second vehicle that was overturned in a wooded section off the roadway with (2)occupants trapped, and a third vehicle that had left the roadway coming to rest after hitting a fence and several small trees.

All three vehicles came to rest several hundred feet apart and there was a total of 7 patients.

The operator of the vehicle that was on fire was able to escape prior to arrival of responders and the (4) patients in the third vehicle were also able to be self-extricated and were lying in a driveway awaiting treatment.

Firefighters and EMT's arrived and were able to quickly triage the patients and perform various tasks on scene

Additional ambulances from Mutual Aid Departments were requested to the scene to assist with treatment and transport to local hospitals.

Engine 8-5-4 arrived on scene and quickly extinguished the vehicle fire.

Heavy Rescue 8-5-5 was assigned to extricate the 2 patients from the 2nd overturned vehicle. After the vehicle was stabilized, crews were able to extricate the patients via a windshield removal.

Ambulances from Cutchogue FD, Mattituck FD, Southold FD, Greenport FD, and Riverhead Vol. Ambulance Corp. transported the patients to area hospitals for treatment with non-life-threatening injuries.

CFD Fire police units directed traffic during the incident.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Southold Town Police Department.
