On Sunday Afternoon at approximately 5:49 p.m the Cutchogue Fire Department was dispatched to a reported water rescue in the Long Island Sound in the area of Duck Pond Point.

Southold Town Police Communications had received a 911 call from a boater reporting his boat taking on water and sinking rapidly.

CFD units along with Southold Town Police were dispatched to the scene and the Mattituck Fire Department was additionally called to assist at the scene with their boat.

The first arriving Fire and Police units were able to spot the (4) boaters in the water clinging to their now submerged boat approximately 1/2 mile off shore.

The (4) people in the water were wearing (PFD's) personal flotation devices.

As the CFD marine unit and other resources were arriving on scene, an alert good Samaritan boater spotted the people in the water and immediately pulled up to assist them.

The good Samaritans were able to pull the 4 boaters safely onto their vessel and transported them to shore where they were evaluated by Emergency Medical personnel.

Thanks to the alertness of 3 concerned citizens and the cooperation of all the agencies involved, the 4 boaters were rescued and brought to shore safely.

Once on shore they were evaluated by EMS personnel and refused any medical treatment.

The Southold Town Police Department Drone (UAS) unit and Marine unit also provided assistance at the scene.

Coincidentally, this was the same location of a dramatic rescue that took place nearly 2 years ago, in July of 2023.

During this busy boating season, boaters are reminded to be sure you wear PFD's and have your safety equipment at the ready. It could save your life.
