On Sunday evening Cutchogue Firefighters were called to assist the Southold Fire Department at the scene of a working barn fire in Southold.

At approximately 8:33 p.m. Southold Town Police dispatchers began to receive a flurry of 911calls reporting a large fire on Route 48 near Ackelry Pond Lane. The Southold Fire Department was dispatched to respond.

Police and Firefighters arrived on scene to find heavy fire consuming a barn located in the complex of Cifareli's Nursery.

The Cutchogue FD was requested to assist at the scene with a Rapid Intervention Team (R.I.T.) in the event of any firefighter emergencies. The crew made the response aboard CFD's ladder truck 8-5-3.

Southold Firefighters arrived on scene and began attempting to knock down the fire using available tank water and water supplied from a nearby hydrant.

The fire quickly spread to 2 nearby structures and began to threaten another large barn and house on the property.

Once the water supply was established, firefighters deployed several additional handlines and master stream from Southold's aerial ladder 8-4-1 to fight the fire.

Once the fires were knocked down, Cutchogue firefighters would assist in the overhaul of the buildings to ensure that the fire was fully extinguished and there were no additional hotspots.

The Greenport FD also provided stand-by coverage at the Southold firehouse in the event of any other alarms.

Firefighters operated on scene for over 2 hours.

There were no injuries reported.

As is routine, the exact cause is currently being investigated by the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad and the cause of the fire is not considered to be suspicious.

The Chief of the Southold Fire Department, Pindar Damianos was in charge of the incident.
