"Jaws of Life" Used at Route 48 Accident

Just before 5:30 p.m. on Saturday Evening, the Cutchogue Fire Department was dispatched to the intersection of County Route #48 and Cox Lane for a reported Motor Vehicle Accident.

The first units on scene were confronted with a two car collision resulting in the driver of a 4-door sedan becoming trapped.

Firefighters and EMT's arrived and went to work treating the injured parties, while the crew from Heavy Rescue 8-5-5 utilized the Jaws of Life to extricate the occupant by removing the drivers door from the vehicle.

Once freed from the vehicle the patient was transported by CFD ambulance to Eastern Long Island hospital in Greenport for treatment of minor injuries. The driver of the second vehicle was uninjured and was evaluated by EMT's at the scene.

A portion of route 48 was closed for while crews operated at the scene.

CFD Fire police units diverted traffic to other area roads during this time.

Firefighters stood by until the vehicles were towed from the scene and road was safe to reopen to normal traffic.

The cause of the crash is currently being investigated by the Southold Town Police Department.

All units cleared the scene just after 1830 hours.
