At Approximately 2117 hrs on Sunday Evening the Cutchogue Fire Department was dispatched to at the request of the United States Coast Guard and Southold Town Police to rescue 3 boaters that were stranded on the sand bar on the North side of Robins Island in New Suffolk.

The boaters were aboard a 20 foot center console boat travelling through Peconic Bay when they ran aground on Robins Island.

The 3 subjects (2 males and 1 female) all approx 25-30 years of age, had been stranded on the sand bar for several hours. They were eventually able to make contact with someone on land, who then relayed the message for help to the Southold Town Police.

The Cutchogue Fire Department along with the assistance of the Mattituck Fire Department responded with boats to rescue the boaters and transport them to shore. The three were located and transported to the New Suffolk Boat ramp where they were met by additional emergency medical personnel.

Because of the cold temperatures, 2 of the boaters were suffering from exposure and were showing symptoms of hypothermia. They were both transported by ambulance to Eastern Long Island Hospital for Treatment. The third patient appeared to be uninjured and was evaluated and released at the scene.

Units from the Cutchogue Fire Department, Mattituck Fire Department and the Southold Town Police operated on scene for one and a half hours.

The damaged boat was secured on the sand bar until it could be safely removed in the daylight hours.
