CFD Responds to Tractor Trailer Fire

On Saturday afternoon, at approximately 3:15 p.m. the Cutchogue Fire Department was dispatched to a reported vehicle Fire at the North Fork Sanitation transfer facility located on Cox Lane in Cutchogue.

The first arriving fire and Police Department units were confronted with a fire consuming a large portion of a 100 yard tractor trailer containing a full load of construction and demolition debris.

Firefighters arrived and attempted to knock down the flames. Because the facility was located off the roadway firefighters had to lay over 1200 feet of hose to supply water to the scene.

In addition to several hose lines, Firefighters also utilized a metal saw cut open the side of the trailer to reach parts of the fire.

Besides flames firefighters had to battle high humidity and summer temperatures that were over 90 degrees at the time of the fire. To provide relief additional help was called from the Mattituck Fire department who responded with an Engine and Manpower to the scene.

The Jamesport Fire Department responded with an engine to stand-by at the Cutchogue Firehouse in the event of any additional Calls.

One the flames were knocked down, an excavator was called in to assist in removing the load of debris from the trailer to ensure that the stubborn fire was fully extinguished.

Firefighters were on scene for almost 3 hours.

No injuries were reported.

This was the second of 4 significant fires on the North Fork this afternoon. Area Firefighters also battled working house fires in Jamesport & Riverhead while Southold Firefighters extinguished a fire at a local Restaurant.
