On Sunday morning at about 7:00 a.m. CFD Volunteers responded to a reported Chimney Fire at a residence on Highland Road in Cutchogue.

Firefighters arrived finding a moderate smoke condition throughout the home and confirmed that there was an active fire burning in the walls around the chimney and fireplace.

Homeowners had used the fireplace overnight and awoke to smoke filling their home.

While a crew of firefighters entered the interior to attempt to locate and extinguish the fire, additional Firefighters laddered the home to inspect the chimney from the roof,

Crews checked the home's interior walls surrounding the chimney for any fire extension utilizing a thermal imaging camera, and removed parts of the fireplace and mantle using hand and power tools to access the fire burning in the walls.

Firefighters worked on scene for over an hour to ensure that all fire was extinguished and the home was safe for the homeowners to re-enter.

Mattituck FD stood by at the Cutchogue Fire house during the incident in the event of any other calls.
