Tuesday April 16th was the Cutchogue Fire Department's monthly in-house training night.

The topic of this month's training was vehicle extrication.

Volunteers took part in the training that included a mock vehicle accident scenario involving both Firefighters and EMT's.

Using a donated vehicle, firefighters to practiced their extrication skills using the Hurst, hydraulic rescue tools commonly referred to as the "Jaws of Life".

These tools are commonly used at serious motor vehicle accidents in which the occupants are trapped. The tools are designed to cut or move parts of a vehicle away from the patient.

The drill lasted approximately 2 hours and gave firefighters a valuable opportunity to practice their skills.

Firematic Supply was also on hand for the drill to demonstrate the newly purchased Hurst battery operated E-Draulic tools. The drill gave CFD Firefighters the opportunity to become familiar with the newest generation of extrication tools that will now be placed in service on our Heavy Rescue Truck 8-5-5.

These new tools are designed to work against the materials used in today's modern vehicle construction

Thank you to Oregon Rd. Recycling, and Rescue Squad Captain Kate Michalak for donating the vehicles to CFD for training and Mark Tullo of Firematic Supply for assisting with the nights training.

CFD and other local fire departments welcome the donation of used / junk cars to be used for training purposes such as these.
