Gas Leak in Cutchogue Village

On Wednesday Afternoon 12:49 p.m. The Cutchogue Fire Department was dispatched for a gas emergency on Route 25 in Cutchogue Village.

Contractors who were digging at a nearby business struck and ruptured a natural gas line servicing the old Capital One bank building located at the intersection of New Suffolk Rd. and State Route 25 in the heart of Cutchogue Village, just a hundred yards from the firehouse.

As firefighters arrived at the firehouse, the noise created by the leak was was easily recognizable.

In an effort to prevent the gas from entering nearby businesses, Engine 8-5-4 laid hose from the hydrant located in the Firehouse parking lot and parked in a position at the bank to utilize its deck gun and hand line to disperse the gas while Quint 8-5-3 positioned itself on Route 25 and deployed its aerial master stream to help disperse the gas away from the neighboring storefront.

Fire Police unites diverted traffic in the area.

National Grid Gas company was immediately notified to respond and arrived on scene within the hour to stop the leak.

Once the gas was shut off, Firefighters checked monitored the area businesses for any further problems before returning to the firehouse.

Crews were on scene for approximately 1 hour 30 minutes

Units: Chiefs 8-5-30 & 32 Engine 8-5-4, Quint 8-5-3, Fire police 8-5-6, 8-5-15
