CFD Responds to Overnight Fire At Peconic Recycling

Early this morning at 12:53 a.m., the Cutchogue Fire Department was dispatched for an Automatic Fire Alarm at the Peconic Recycling Facility located on Commerce Drive in Cutchogue.

Upon arrival of the Southold Town Police units and the First arriving Chiefs, smoke could be seen coming from the structure. The call was immediately upgraded and re-dispatched as a structure fire.

The location in a large commercial building that operates as a transfer station that processes large amounts of garbage, debris and other recyclable materials.

And upon gaining entry to the building a large pile of garbage was found to be on fire within the building.

First arriving 8-5-4 arrived and deployed several handlines and began to knock the fire, while Quint 8-5-3 arrived and set up in front of the building.

In order to gain better access to the seat of the fire, firefighters utilized power saws to cut the large metal overhead garage door, as well as utilized heavy equipment to move and break up the piles of garbage and debris.

Engine 8-5-1 established a water supply from a nearby hydrant while tankers from Southold FD and Mattituck FD were on scene in case additional water was needed.

The aerial ladder from from 8-5-3 was utilized to help open enlarge the opening of the overhead door and was then placed into service as a mater stream to extinquish any remaining fire and smoldering hot spots.

Additional assistance for both equipment and manpower was requested from Mattituck, Southold, Greenport Fire Departments who all responded to the scene.

Units operated on scene for over 3 hours.

No injuries were reported.

Thank you to the CFD Ladies Auxiliary who provided much needed refreshments and rehab supplies during and after the fire.

This would be the last of 7 calls that the Department responded to in a 24 hour period.
