Passing of a Brother: Ex-Chief & Ex-Commissioner Gerald S. "Whitey" Wells has answered his last alarm.

It is with deep regret and sorrow that the Chiefs of the Cutchogue Fire Department, announce that Ex-Chief & Ex-Commissioner Gerald S. Wells has answered his last alarm.

"Whitey" as he was known to many, passed away peacefully yesterday morning. He was 88 years old.

Whitey served as Chief of the Cutchogue Fire Department in 1969 and 1970 and at the time of his passing was Cutchogue Fire Department's most senior Ex-Chief.

He also served the residents of the Cutchogue Fire District, on the board of Fire Commissioners, by serving as a Fire Commissioer from 1972-1981.

After moving to East Marion, Whitey was remained active socially, serving at the Chicken BBQ for many years, regularly attended annual chiefs and commissioners dinners, and up until recent time attended monthly feeds at the firehouse before his health began to decline.

He had a long career with the Mattituck-Cutchogue School District where he served as the head custodian for many years and was a veteran of the US Navy.

Wednesday December 11, 2019: DeFriest-Grattan Funeral in Mattituck 2-4 & 7-9pm

***A Firematic Service will be held on Wednesday Evening at 7:30pm.

Funeral Service:

Thursday, December 12, 2019: A 9:00 am service for family and friends will be held at the funeral home with FD Honors.

Internment will follow at the Calverton National Cemetery.

The Chiefs, Officers and Members of the Cutchogue Fire Department would like to extend our heartfelt condolences the Wells family and all of Whitey's friends here at CFD
