C.F.D. Ladies Auxiliary
Celebrating 75 Years of Dedication 1933-2008
The Ladies Auxiliary of the United Fire Company of Cutchogue was organized in the fall of 1933 with several wives, sisters, and daughters of the fireman present at the first meeting. The late Mrs. Alice Grathwohl was the first president of the new organization.
The objectives of the Auxiliary were to aid the Fireman at all times and to promote social and friendly relations among its members. These objectives still hold true today. During the early years, the Auxiliary members prepared refreshments at the firehouse for the fireman when they returned from fires.
The Auxiliary entered a float in the Southold Town Tercentenary Parade on July 3, 1940, and marched in the Cutchogue Day of History Parade on July 6, 1941. This marked the beginning of the Ladies Auxiliary Parade Squad which has been active ever since, winning many awards and trophies for their neat and attractive appearances in local parades they have entered over the years.
During World War II the Ladies Auxiliary sent gifts and money to the fireman in the military services, baked for fireman on night watch, made compresses and rolled bandages for the police, fireman and Air Raid Wardens. The Ladies also helped in War Loan Drives.
For many years the Ladies Auxiliary has contributed to the local Little League, Youth Groups, Scouting Groups, and local Charities too many to mention. Each year the Ladies also sponsor a scholarship for a deserving graduating senior from our local high schools.
For the past 53 years the Ladies Auxiliary also help co-chair the Cutchogue Fire Department’s Annual Chicken Barbecue with the fireman and share the proceeds therefrom. The Ladies Auxiliary also helps plan other events throughout the year such as a Children’s Holloween Parade, Christmas parties, Annual Installation Dinner Dance, as well many more.
For the past 75 years the Ladies Auxiliary of the Cutchogue Fire Department has stood by ready willing and able to support the fireman of Cutchogue and will continue to do so for many years to come.
