On Tuesday Evening around 7:30 p.m. Cutchogue Firefighters were dispatched to a 179 Old Harbor Rd. in New Suffolk for a possible garage fire. Southold Town Police Communications had recieved 911 calls from neighbors reporting smoke coming from the home.

Police and Firefighters arrived on scene to find heavy smoke pushing from the home and fire consuming the rear of a two-story home that was located well off the roadway, down a long driveway and along the shores of Peconic Bay.

The alarm was re-transmitted as a working fire, and Mutual Aid was requested from the Mattituck and Southold Fire Departments to aassist at the scene. Mattituck FD provided a Rapid Intervention team while Southold FD responded with an engine.

Cutchogue Firefighters arrived on scene navigating the long narrow driveway through the woods and began attempting to knock down the fire using available tank water until a water supply could be establised from nearby hydrant.

Approximatley 1500 feet of 5"inch supply hose from Engines 8-5-1 and 8-5-4 had to be layed to the scene.

Firefighters forced entry to the home an deployed several handlines to attack the fire that had consumed the rear kitchen area and attic space above the garage.

Crews from ladder truck 8-5-3, laddered the building using the aerial ladder and ground ladders to ventilate the roof. While other crews searched and fought the fire on the interior.

SFD firefighters assisted with additional searches and overhaul of the home.

A majority of the Fire damage was confined to the kitchen, dining room and attic areas and required extensive overhaul to check for any remaining fire in the walls.

The remainder of the home suffered extensive smoke and heat damage.

The Mattituck Fire Department responded to the scene and stood by with a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) in event of a firefighter emergency.

Fire police assisted with directing traffic in the area.

Crews were released from the scene nearly 2 1/2 hours later to return to HQ for additinal clean-up.

No one was in the home at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries reported.

As is routine, the exact cause of the fire is unknown at this time and is currently being investigated by the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad.

Operations were under the command of Chief Amos Meringer.

The Greenport FD provided a stand-by crew that were stationed at the Cutchogue FD in the event of any other alarms during the incident and Jamesport FD stood by at the Mattituck FD.
