Fire Prevention Program Works

Having your house suddenly fill up with smoke can be scary for anyone, especially for child.

On Saturday morning June 20th the Cutchogue Fire Department was dispatched to respond to a reported structure fire on Alvah's Lane when the occupants of the home called 911 reporting smoke inside their home.

CFD firefighters quickly arrived at the home to find the entire family at their meeting place located near the road.

Firefighters on the first due engine pulled a 1 ¾ as a precaution and deployed a search team to search the home for the source of the smoke. Firefighters were able to trace the source of the smoke to a malfunctioning microwave in the kitchen. Firefighters removed the microwave from the home and used fans to ventilate the home and remove the smoke.

Shortly thereafter the Chief spoke to the family about the incident. What he learned was truly fascinating.

One of the children had discovered the smoke and had alerted her family.

Even though there was only light smoke in the home, she remembered what she had learned during fire prevention week from the firefighters that came to her school. She remembered what she had done in the fire prevention trailer. She dropped to her hands and knees and began to crawl out of the house with the rest of her family. Once outside she made sure that everyone was safely at their meeting place and waited for the fire department just as she was taught.

Though this incident did not turn out to be serious, it serves as one example of how our firefighters impact the children in our community.

The time that the Firefighters Volunteer each year to teach the children of our community during our many different Fire Prevention Programs truly does pay off.
