| On Saturday March 21st, two members of CFD had the opportunity to visit and tour the Sikorsky Aircraft plant in Stratford, Connecticut.
Water Rescue Captain Ed Nicholson and Firefighter Garret Lake were part of a group of 20 firefighters representing Long Island North Shore Search and Rescue (LINSSAR). This association is comprised of area fire departments located along the shoreline of the Long Island Sound on the North Shore of Suffolk County. The group's purpose is to foster a working relationship between the many agencies who may respond to emergencies in the Long Island Sound. The group meets on a regular basis, and routinely shcedules joint training sessions.
One of the recent training sessions included a lecture from the Chief of Sikorsky Aircraft Fire-Rescue. The Chief traveled to Long Island and gave a presentation on helicopter emergencies, and discussed how our agencies can prepare for a potential aircraft crash in Long Island Sound.
As a follow up to his lecture, the Chief invited representatives from the area Fire Departments to visit the Sikorsky Aircraft facility in Stratford, Connecticut.
Sikorsky is well known for its manufacturing of military helicopters, such as the Blackhawk, and similar versions that are currently in use by our Armed Forces and locally at the 106th Air National Guard Wing at Garbeski Airport in Westhampton Beach.
While at the facility, firefighters were given a tour of the fire station and the crash rescue equipment used by Sikorsky Aviation Fire Rescue.
The Cutchogue Fire Department would like to thank the members of Sikorsky Fire-Rescue and LINSSAR for their hospitality and arranging this very informative trip.
